Vitamin D and its role in Bone Health
You’ve probably bought milk, cereal, supplements, or another food that totted the fact that it contained Vitamin D. It’s also likely that you’ve heard on tv or read on the internet that Vitamin D is extremely important, and to make sure that you are getting enough. The problem is, we don’t always know why everyone tells us we need Vitamin D in our regular diet. The health benefits of Vitamin D for our bodies are numerous, and are very important to our overall well-being.
Vitamin D and our Bones
The most well-known benefit associated with Vitamin D is its ability to help our bodies maintain strong bones. Vitamin D helps the body regulate Calcium absorption, which is integral in keeping our bones strong. Our bodies constantly lose Calcium in natural processes such as hair and fingernail growth. With the aid of Vitamin D, our body is able to absorb the Calcium we ingest in order to replace what we normally lose. This in turn helps support our bones, which are dependent on Calcium to remain strong.
The importance of bone strength in our bodies cannot be overstated. As we grow older, our bones are likely to become more brittle, and susceptible to breaks and fractures. These breaks and fractures can harm our bodies in many different ways apart from the initial injury. According to the Surgeon General, 20% of Senior Citizens who suffer a hip fracture die within 1 year as a result of poor bone health.. Without taking proper precautions, and maintaining Vitamin D levels in our bodies, we are more likely to suffer from poor bone health and subsequent problems associated with it.
Disease Prevention
Osteoperosis is an increasingly common disease in Senior Citizens partly due to diets low in Vitamin D. According to the Center for Disease Control, Vitamin D helps the absorption of Calcium, and deficiency may in part lead to the development of Osteopersosis as you grow older. In order to help limit the chances of contracting the disease, it is believed that you should take in an adequate amount of Vitamin D.
Overall, Vitamin D is very important in maintaining bone strength within the human body. Vitamin D helps regulate the absorption of Calcium, which is the key component to keeping your bones healthy. It is important to maintain adequate Vitamin D levels in order to help limit the likelihood of developing serious bone problems as we age.
