Vitamin Supplements
Health Benefits of Vitamin Supplements
More so now than ever, it is important to have a proper understanding of our nutrition, and the nutrients our bodies need. Some of the
main building blocks of the human body's diet are vitamins. Vitamins are nutrients that the body requires, and must be obtained from food sources.
Unfortunately, the human body is unable to manufacture vitamins on its own.
Therefore, we must look to the food we eat, or nutritional supplements for the vitamins that are necessary for our bodies.
Currently, scientists recognize 13 different vitamins, including:
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin K
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamin B12
- Biotin
- Folate
- Niacin
- Pantothenic Acid
- Riboflavin
- Thiamin
Vitamins serve many functions in the normal metabolism and functions of the body.
Some of these functions include: growth, digestion, nerve functions, maintaining bone strength,
promoting proper blood clotting, immunity, disease fighting, heart disease prevention, and many more important body processes.
Fruits and vegetables are major sources of vitamins. Historically, nutrition experts have advised that most of the body's daily
requirements can be met by eating a sensible diet. Federal nutritions agencies have provided food pyramids to educate the public about
the proper diets to eat which provide the right amount of vitamins. Due to current dietary habits, fast food, etc., an estimated 74
percent of Americans no not meet the food pyramid guidelines. Multivitamin supplements, therefore, have become increasingly important
in providing the body with these important substances.
There are thousands of vitamin preparations available. Experts recommend products that are manufactured by reputable laboratories
that are USP (United States Pharmocopeia) certified. These vitamin products are certified to contain the ingredients and amounts
stated on the label. Vitamins should be taken in their proper amounts. Taking extra high doses of vitamins can actually be harmful to
the body. All vitamins and supplement products should be taken with caution by individuals with medical conditions. Anyone with
medical conditions should consult their Physician prior to taking vitamin supplements.
